A lot of pianists learn how to play piano without ever reading music. They still use the basics of theory,
to get started, for example to learn chords, scales, and popular patterns, but they will train themselves to play
by ear, rather than relying on a musical score.
Playing by ear is a positive thing, and some of the best pianists in the world can’t read music, they play
purely by ear, which enables you to put a lot more feeling into your songs, and very often musicians that play just
by relying on a score, don’t seem to have any dynamic in their playing.
A good way to learn some songs without music is to pick a song that you are very familiar with, and try to pick
something simple to start with, and to then learn what chords are in it. If you have the music playing in your
stereo, try and pin point a few main chords, and then work out the rest from here. For the rhythm focus on one of
the chords initially, and keep playing this, until you find a suitable rhythm for it. You will be able to find the
chords on the internet to help you out if you need too.
After a while you will find a method that works best for you, for some it’s a matter of listening to the CD, and
playing along to it, others its finding the chords out from another source and having a songsheet to follow, or you
could mix both of these, but whatever way you do it, I can guarantee you be completely satisfied and the end result
being that you have learnt a new song without relying on sheet music.
Another good way to train yourself to play by ear is to try and figure out some melodies of your own. Find some
chords that you like the sound of so maybe two MAJOR & two MINOR chords, and try putting something together
from these. You will be surprised how good they sound.
